Islamabad (PR) – Indicating an over 27 percent decrease from previous month, 21 terrorist attacks took place across Pakistan during May 2018, which killed 31 people – compared to 44 in previous month – and injured 75 others.
Among those 31 killed in terrorist attacks in May were 15 civilians, 7 personnel of security and law enforcement agencies, and 9 militants; those injured included 50 civilians, 24 security personnel and one militant.
As many as 7 terrorist attacks took place in Balochistan – 53% less from the month before – which claimed 17 lives – compared to 34 in previous month – and injured another 27 people. Most of terrorism-related casualties in the province resulted from 3 attacks perpetrated by the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan and Hizbul Ahrar groups.
Compared to 8 in April, as many as 6 terrorist attacks took place in 5 agencies of FATA[1] in May 2018, killing 5 and wounding 6 people. A same number of attacks happened in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), which killed in all 4 people – 2 policemen, one civilian and one militant – and injured 22 others.
One attack also took place in each of Punjab and Sindh provinces.
Although the number of cross-border attacks fell from 17 in April to 11 in May, the number of people killed in such incidents increased from 16 to 17; the number of those injured in such attacks in the month of May (45) was the same as in April.
Compared to 3 in previous month, security and law enforcement agencies conducted 2 operational strikes against militants in May 2018, both in Balochistan. These actions killed 4 militants besides one army soldier and injured 4 army men and one militant.
A single armed clash or encounter between security forces and militants was recorded during the month under review, which killed 6 militants.
In all, 39 incidents of violence of different types took place in Pakistan in May 2018 that claimed the lives of 62 people and injured 131 others.
